However, there are also drawbacks, and there are numerous factors you will need to consider before making this choice. Overall, the U.S. is still considered the best place to get an MBA; in 2014, seven of the top ten MBA programs (according to the Financial Times Global MBA Rankings) were located in the U.S. For Americans applying abroad, European programs are the most popular. Some of the best-known business schools in the world include London Business School, INSEAD (in France), and IESE (with multiple campuses in Europe). First and foremost, you need to figure out how getting an MBA abroad will fit your long-term goals. You will be building your professional network in a foreign country, rather than at home, and your qualifications (as well as the reputation of your school) may not easily transfer if you decide to return to the U.S. after graduation. However, the foreign language skills and international experience you gain can also be a huge asset in your future career; it all depends on your particular aspirations. Foreign MBA programs may be easier to get into than domestic ones, partially because American applicants are highly valued overseas. They also tend to last a shorter amount of time - one year vs. two years for most U.S. programs - although this advantage is quickly disappearing as more and more U.S. schools offer accelerated MBA programs. You will need to look into the visa application process for the country where you wish to study. Generally, you need a student visa in order to attend school in a foreign country. If you are hoping to obtain employment during school, you may face a number of challenges. You will be overseas for an extended period of time, so you need to consider the possibility of illness or injury. International MBAs can sometimes be cheaper, but they can also be much more expensive. Do not just consider tuition when evaluating your options; remember to account for airfare, housing, and other living expenses. Tips From an Irvine College Consultant Dollars and Sense Tips From an Irvine College Consultant: Dollars and Sense at College Students who are excited to go off to college this fall will be primarily focused on how to manage their academic workload, make new friends, and do well on their exams. What most freshmen dont think about is how to manage their money. Some students will have funds provided by their parents to help support them while theyre concentrating on their studies while others will have income from a part-time job. Either way, most college students don’t have experience with financial management. The following tips from an Irvine college consultant can help students manage their money so they can focus the majority of their energy on education. 1. Get out the calculator Incoming freshmen are encouraged to get out the calculator and their bank statements prior to leaving for college and look at how much money per month they expect to earn and spend. For example, if a student has secured a part time job at a coffee shop on campus, they should consider the following: $8 per hour X 15 hours per week =$120 to spend before taxes. Don’t forget to factor in taxes! If tuition and fees are being funded by family or a scholarship, a student will have around $100 per week on miscellaneous activities. A movie out with friends costs about $13.50; a cup of coffee to keep going through a long study session costs about $1.50. 2. Open a bank account Many students who started working at a part time job at 16 already have a bank account. Those who dont should open one as soon as they turn 18. Opening a bank account generally requires a minimum of $50 be put into savings and checking. Also consider the importance of choosing a bank that has an ATM and branch location located either on campus or near campus. Students who are attending school out of state are reminded that not everything is national and they may need to open a second account if they’re attending school out of state. Remember to check the account at least once a week to determine how much money was spent and how much is left. Students with an overdraft in their account could find themselves subject to any number of fees and penalties (READ: 5 Things to do Before You Go Away to College). 3. Credit versus debit Remember to think about the difference between a credit card and debit card when paying for miscellaneous living expenses. Students are responsible for paying their credit card bill on a specific day each month while debit takes money directly from their checking account. It’s tempting to put a lot of items on a credit card and pay the minimum fee, however, this can leave students in a bad position when they graduate as they may have excessive debt but no full time job to pay it off. 4. Additional earning If having $120 per week for pocket money simply isnt enough, one option is to extend work hours. However, many college freshmen will already struggle to deal with academics and won’t want to choose this option. Students who need extra work hours should consider working on the weekend, during breaks, or during the summer when their educational commitments are not as strict (Read: Unpaid Internships: Weighing the Benefits). 5. Practical ways to save New college students should weigh the difference between similar expenses to see where they can save money. For instance, a movie out costs about $13.50, while a Redbox movie costs about $1.20. A brand new, shiny chemistry book costs around $100, while a used chemistry book (with a few pencil marks and highlights) costs around $75. Bottom Line These are just a few basic examples, but it’s important for new college students to remember that every dollar adds up and that the old adage that “a penny saved is a penny earned” really holds true. Regardless of a student’s circumstances, its important to consult somebody experienced in finance to help manage money prior to going off to college in an unsupervised financial situation. Too many college students graduate at 22 to find they have far more debt than they can handle, which makes the early-career period more difficult. Theres more than just one type of intelligence. What to Know About College Application Fee Waivers You Should Know About College Application Fee Waivers You Should Know About College Application Fee Waivers If you are applying to college and are in a difficult financial position, you should know about the prevalence of college application fee waivers for students in your position. Many parents and other adults know the application costs of applying to several schools and imprint this knowledge on younger students. Application fees for each individual college can range from $25 to $100, and if you are applying to several schools this can add up in a hurry. Luckily, there are ways to reduce this expense. Read below to find your situation. + You received an SAT or ACT fee waiver. If you already received for one of these fee waivers, it will allow you to automatically qualify for unlimited free fee waivers for schools that use the Common application, the Coalition application, or the Universal application. These three generic applications will grant you free access to around 1000 different colleges (about 800 of which are in the most popular Common application). You should receive your application fee waiver at the same time you receive your test results. Here is how you can qualify for an SAT or ACT waiver (from CollegeBoard): -Youre enrolled in (or eligible for) the National School Lunch Program -Youre enrolled in a program to assist low-income students -Your family receives public assistance -You live in subsidized housing or a foster home or are homeless -You are a ward of the state or an orphan + You didnt get an SAT or ACT waiver but still exhibit financial hardships If you havent taken these tests or did not know about the fee waivers, it is still possible to elect for a Common application fee waiver. This will allow you to apply to as many Common App schools as you want for free. The Common App has the same criteria for qualification as the SAT fee waiver (see above), with one extra criteria: You can provide a supporting statement from a school official, college access counselor, financial aid officer, or community leader (from CommonApp.org). Your school counselor will be asked to confirm your qualification for a fee waiver. Make sure you talk to them if you think you need one for your applications. + You dont qualify for either fee waiver or want to apply to non-waived schools First, you should know that around 45% of colleges on the Common App do now charge a fee (as of 2018, via USNews). This means that you have access to over 300 schools you can apply to without any charge. Many students do not realize this and assume that every application will cost them. You can also request fee waivers from schools. This is the part that can save you a lot of money if you are applying to many colleges and dont qualify for the standard waivers. Reach out to the schools that you want to apply to and request a fee waiver or fee reduction for their application. When doing so, you can explain your situation to support your need for a waiver, or you can simply ask. Colleges dont want to lose potential applicants, especially potentially desirable applicants, and most will have the funds readily available to waive many students application fees to encourage them to apply. Some colleges even send out application fees to students theyre interested in without being asked. The worst that can happen is that they deny your request or do not offer waivers. If this happens, you simply have to decide if it is still financially worth it to apply. Here are a few tips to aid you in requests: -Ask early. Admissions officers will be swamped with emails and applications in the month leading up to their deadline. Ask months in advance and they will be less busy. Asking early will also increase your chances if the school only offers a certain number of waivers per year. -State your case. Explain why you really want to apply to the school but that the cost is prohibitive for you to do so. If you were eligible for the waivers above, explain that to them. -Be polite and formal. Hopefully, this is obvious, but you do not want to be rude or short in your request. Treat an email as a regular letter with a friendly greeting and signature at the bottom. Application fees should never hold you back from applying to great colleges that can improve your future. Many schools are already free to apply to, and many others are able to waive your fee if you need it. Talk to your school counselor for more help in your application process.
